Nuffield Foundation - Racial Diversity UK Fund
Background
The Racial Diversity UK Fund (RDUK) is funded by an endowment supporting work relating to the Commonwealth. It focuses on the future of UK society as shaped by its colonial past, specifically by the migration of people from former British colonies. This migration and the accompanying dynamics of racialisation, resources and power have produced the UK’s distinct racial diversity and patterns of discrimination and inequality. The fund takes a broad view of racial diversity, covering all racial or ethnic groups living in the UK.
Objectives of Fund
The programme aims to fund research that will contribute to understanding, public debate, policy and/or practice on tackling racial inequalities, discrimination and disadvantage, and to map pathways towards a UK that is comfortable with and reaps the benefits of its growing racial diversity.
The priority theme for 2026 is Inter-generational changes, continuities and challenges in a racially diverse UK. This explores what generational shifts in outlooks, experiences and conditions mean for the potentials and challenges of the UK’s racially diverse future. This might include issues of identities, belonging and exclusions; aspirations and values; civic and political participation; and life chances and experiences.
Value Notes
Grants range from £15,000 to £500,000. Most grants awarded are below £300,000. Full economic costs can be funded for up to 100% of eligible project costs. Projects usually last between six months and three years.
Who Can Apply
The fund is open to a wide range of UK-based organisations, including universities, research organisations, and voluntary sector bodies. The applicant must be employed by, or have a formal affiliation with, a UK-based organisation.
Partnership applications are strongly encouraged, particularly those which bring together researchers and racially minoritised communities to explore challenges and develop solutions. Applicants from diverse backgrounds, particularly individuals and organisations from racially minoritised communities, are also encouraged to apply.

How To Apply
This is a two-stage application process with one annual deadline.
Key dates:
- Outline application deadline: 5 October 2026.
- Successful outline applicants will be invited to submit a Full application in January 2027.
- Decisions on full applications are made in May 2027, with the earliest project start in July 2027.
