Skipton Building Society Charitable Foundation
Background
The Skipton Building Society Charitable Foundation was established in February 2000 by Skipton Building Society. Since then it has given away more than £3.4 million.
Independent of the Society and its policies, the Foundation's decisions are determined by a Board of Trustees, the majority of which are independent of the Society.
Objectives of Fund
The funding is intended for UK registered charities whose purpose is to:
- Benefit children and adults particularly those living in socially deprived areas, through education to develop core skills and support wellbeing and mental health.
- Benefit the wellbeing and welfare of children and adults by preventing or reducing poverty and homelessness in the community.
- Support the elderly and improve their wellbeing by reducing isolation, helping reduce the effects of Dementia and Alzheimer's and support later life/palliative care.
Value Notes
The maximum grant available is £6,000.
Please note the Foundation's emphasis is on smaller amounts with the aim of supporting as many good causes as possible throughout the UK.
Who Can Apply
UK registered charities based and working in the UK may apply. They must have submitted their trustee annual report, annual return and latest audited accounts to the Charity Commission. Charities must have at least one year of published accounts covering a 12-month period.
Successful applicants must wait three years before re-applying. Unsuccessful applicants must wait two years before re-applying.

Restrictions
The following are not eligible for funding:
- Salaries.
- Facilitator/contractor fees and expenses.
- Counselling/therapy/mentor costs.
- Volunteer expenses.
- Venue hire/rent.
- Bills.
- Admin costs, eg, insurance, overheads, IT equipment for the charities own use.
- Staff and volunteer training.
- Advertising and printing/copying costs.
- Vehicle purchase or its running costs.
- Construction, upkeep or restoration of buildings.
- Donations for subsequent distribution to other charities or individuals.
Eligible Expenditure
The funding is for items or activities that have tangible benefit to the charity's beneficiaries.
For example, equipment to:
- Support young people as they transition from homelessness to new accommodation such as toiletries, bedding, cooking utensils.
- Engage the elderly in activities, exercise and experiences to help improve mental and physical wellbeing such as a large, digital interactive activity table for a care setting.
How To Apply
The trustees meet quarterly, at the beginning of March, June, September and December.
The deadlines for applications are 5pm:
- 31 January for the March meeting.
- 30 April for the June meeting
- 31 July for the September meeting
- 31 October for the December meeting.
Applications received after the deadline will be considered at the next meeting.
Notifications of decisions can take up to 28 days from the trustees meeting date. Successful applicants will be notified by email.
