About Organisation

The Flying Seagull Project engages and entertains children living in difficult and desperate conditions in the UK and around the world. Through music and dance, arts workshops and circus shows, we bring joy and laughter to children in real need of positivity and happiness. Since 2008 our experienced team of entertainers and play practitioners have shared laughter and play with more than 180,000 vulnerable children across 23 countries. We help deliver against The UN Convention on the Rights of a Child, Article 31 stating "Every child has the right to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts.” The positive environment we create in our sessions encourages inclusivity, breaks down barriers and builds confidence, resulting in a new willingness to take part and improved readiness to learn. Laughter, collective physical play and trusting relationships are essential for a child’s development. These positive interactions help reduce anxiety, increase positive social interaction with other children and families, and allow them to be a child and to play. We recognise and harness the creativity of every child, valuing every child’s opportunity to imagine, create, play and flourish resulting in improved skills, ability and intuition to imagine, conceive, express and create. We use a range of artistic mediums to engage people in difficult or painful situations through circus skills, comedy or magic, using different tools to widen people's appreciation of different types of art and music. We aim to ensure the most marginalised and vulnerable have access to arts and entertainment. As well as bringing joy and laughter, beneficiaries are also developing the tools to dream, imagine and play from an early age, they develop lifelong skills to help through future pain and trauma.
