John Lyon's - Refurbishment Fund

Background

The John Lyon's Charity gives grants to groups and organisations for the benefit of children and young adults up to the age of 25 (or 30 if for young people with special needs or disabilities) who are residents in London's northwest boroughs of Barnet, Brent, Camden, Ealing, Hammersmith and Fulham, Harrow, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, City of London, and the City of Westminster.

Objectives of Fund

Funding is intended to help organisations respond to the impacts of the pandemic by refurbishing their community spaces to enable them to better provide their services to children and young people.

Value Notes

There are two levels of grants available:

  • Small Grants of up to £10,000.
  • Main Grants of up to £35,000.

Total project costs, including the contribution from John Lyon's, cannot exceed £75,000.

Who Can Apply

Applicants must have charitable status and be working with children and young people up to the age of 25 (or 30 for those with disabilities).

Organisations require a minimum two-year lease or equivalent for a Small Grant or a minimum five-year lease for a Main Grant.

Priority will be given to smaller organisations with a turnover of under £500,000.

Restrictions

The following are not eligible for funding:

  • Schools
  • Purchase/renewal of equipment. The refurbishments should be for delivery/service users' spaces and not other spaces such as offices.
  • Retrospective costs.

Eligible Expenditure

Grants can be used for:

  • Minor essential maintenance to a building such as rewiring, roof repairs or plumbing.
  • Small refurbishments such as upgrading kitchens, toilets and communal/delivery spaces.
  • Upgrading or refurbishing indoor or outdoor activity spaces.
  • Making spaces accessible to users.

Projects should be completed within one year of the grant offer.

10% of the grant requested from the Charity must be allocated as contingency funding for unexpected costs.

How To Apply

The application process is dependent upon which grant is being applied for.

Small Grants

This is a single-stage application process with no deadline. Applications are considered six times per year.

Main Grants

There is a two-stage application process:

  • Deadline for first-stage proposals: 24 July 2023.
  • Application deadline for shortlisted projects: mid-September 2023.
